Meniere’s Disease – The Basics

When people suffer from Meniere’s disease, they often feel as if they are alone.   They feel isolated in their symptoms, which causes them to become stressed and depressed.  It is important for people to understand what this disease is and what the symptoms are.  By understanding Meniere’s disease, people can move toward treating their problem.

What is Meniere’s Disease?

Meniere’s disease is a peripheral vascular disorder that affects approximately 2 out of every 1,000 people.  The disease has many symptoms, including vertigo, tinnitus hearing loss, and a fullness in the ears.

The disease typically affects people that are older.  Children are not known to get the disease, and most cases, the sufferer is over forty.  There have been some cases of people in their twenties getting this disease, but that is not common.

Episodes of Meniere’s Disease

The symptoms of the disease can come and go at any time.  Someone can feel fine, and then suddenly, they can have the symptoms.  The degree of intensity of the symptoms will likely be different each time.  In some cases, the symptoms will be so harsh that the affected will get incredibly nauseous due to the vertigo. Other times, they will be able to deal with the symptoms, although they will feel uncomfortable.

This can change without notice, so people with this disease have to be prepared.  They do not know when their symptoms might take hold.

Long Term Effects

Sadly, the symptoms are not the only issues one must consider when it comes to this disease.  Meniere’s disease has long term effects that must be examined.  Most people that suffer from Meniere’s disease end up with hearing loss.  In fact, it is common for people to end up losing 50 to 95% of the hearing in the ear that is affected.

Treatment

People that suffer from Meniere’s disease will likely be put on medication.  The mediation will help with the nausea, and will also work to help with the blood flow in the ear.  There are a variety of medications that can be used to treat this disease, but it is important to know they are not a cure.  They will help alleviate the symptoms, but they will not make the symptoms disappear.

While medications are an option, people tend to find more success with a holistic approach.  Those that work on treating the entire body with diet, exercise, and supplements tend to have more success than those that treat their symptoms through prescription medication.

People with Meniere’s

It is interesting to note that Vincent Van Gogh likely had Meniere’s disease.  Researchers have found clues that link the famous painter to the disease.  In fact, it is speculated that might be why he cut off his ear.  Some people think he was so frustrated with the disease that he ended up cutting off his ear as an act of vengeance against the body part that was causing him so much agony.

Meniere’s disease is a serious issue, but there is no need to deal with it in the same way that Van Gogh did.  Now, there are ways to treat and manage the symptoms.  If you have the disease, you need to look at treatment options so you can deal with the disease.  Stay healthy and look for a holistic approach to healing Meniere’s disease.
