If you have Meniere’s disease, you likely want to get treated right away.  The disease is very difficult to live with if the symptoms are not managed, and thus you need to know what treatments are available, as well as what you can expect from those treatments.

Because Meniere’s disease has multiple symptoms, including tinnitus, vertigo, fullness in the ear, and hearing loss, you will need to take part in many different treatments.  You will need to treat each problem area so you can manage your symptoms and feel better.

Vertigo Treatment

First, your doctor will want to treat the vertigo.  Vertigo will make you feel dizzy and nauseous, and it is very hard to live a fulfilled life when you have these symptoms.  For this problem, you will be given motion sickness or nausea medications.  The medications will help keep your vertigo in check while you live your life.

Vertigo can also be treated with middle ear injections.  Gentamicin or steroids might be injected in your ear to alleviate the systems.  Keep in mind, though, that further hearing loss is a complication of these injections and it is more likely with Gentamicin injections.  However, the Gentamicin injections are more effective in alleviating symptoms than the steroid injections are.  Therefore, it can be very difficult to choose between the injections.

Surgery is a last resort when the vertigo cannot be tamed. The surgeries are directed at the balancing and movement sections of the ear. The balancing section is what causes the vertigo, and by removing it or changing the way it functions, the vertigo can be alleviated. However, this is not a simple surgery and it should be used as a last resort.

Fluid Retention Treatment

You might also be given a diuretic for fluid retention.  Meniere’s disease is caused by a fluid buildup in the ear, and thus, the full feeling in the ear can be reduced if a diuretic is taken.  The diuretic will reduce the amount of fluid a body retains.  This can be very helpful in managing symptoms.  It will not make the symptoms go away, but it will lessen their power over the person.

You will also be given orders to control your diet due to fluid retention.  You will want to avoid salt, as salt will make you retain fluids.  Also, you will want to avoid MSG.

Hearing Treatment

Hearing aids are also a treatment.  Hearing aids will help with the hearing loss, and they can also mask some of the symptoms of tinnitus.  In most cases, someone who suffers from Meniere’s will be given a hearing aid.

Tinnitus Treatment

You will also need to be treated for tinnitus.  There are many different treatments for tinnitus, but the most common is masking. You will likely be given a masking device to help distract you from the sounds of tinnitus.

In most cases, Meniere’s treatment deals with vertigo, as vertigo are often the most debilitating issue of the disease. However, it is important to realize that people will feel better if they deal with the other symptoms as well.  Each symptom of Meniere’s disease works together to make the disease more debilitating, and thus each symptom must be cured.
