The Different Types Of Hearing Test
Saturday, October 8th, 2011Having a hearing test is significant if you think you are beginning to lose your hearing. Having a test is also important if you begin to get tinnitus which is a persistent sound inside the inner ear. This is mostly audible ringing but can be can other types of sound also. Step 1 for a hearing or tinnitus test is for your medical professional to physically inspect your ear. Using an instrument with a light at the end, called an auriscope or otoscope, they will look for anything that's not normal, including; discharge, a prominent ear drum, punctured ear drum or an object that could be blocking the ear. You may also be asked about any discomfort or discomfort which you could be getting.
The are one or two different test and these may include whispering or a ticking watch, tuning fork, audiometry or bone oscillator:
Whispering or employing a ticking watch. One ear at a time will be blocked and the nurse or doctor will test your ability to hear with sounds of varying volumes. In the whispering test, you could have to copy the words aloud, when you hear them murmured.
Tuning fork. A tuning fork is a Y-shaped metal object which, when struck, creates sound waves at a fixed pitch. It’s generally used for tuning instruments. Doctors utilise a tuning fork by tapping it on their elbow or knee, to make it vibrate, then holding it at every side of your head. It's going to be held 1st in the air near your ear, to discover how well you hear sounds that are broadcast through air vibrations. Then it could be held to the bone behind your ear (mastoid bone) to see how well you can hear when the waves are broadcast to your interior ear thru the bone.
Audiometry. In this test you are given earphones to wear, which are connected to a machine. Sounds of different volumes (loudness) are played thru the earphones, and you have got to indicate whether you heard them. You could have to raise a hand or click on a button. Children could have to move a coloured block.
Bone oscillator. A little different test can be used to check how well you hear sounds that are sent thru the bone instead of the air. This uses an instrument called a bone oscillator placed against the bone behind your ear.
Your hearing might be fine and tinnitus is often an indication of another health concern that may be unrelated to hearing. As an example in can be damages to the ear itself, a prior head injury or changes to blood pressure in the blood vessels near to the ear.
